Mr. Endo deserves the thanks of the entire planet. He has probably done more to aide in the treatment of heart disease than any other human being in history. He never made any money off of his discovery and is the recipient of the Lasker Prize for his achievement. Why he has not received a Nobel Prize is anybody’s guess but it must be politics because there is nobody more deserving.

| Two Fabulous Tips |
| |
You really need to know the following. Some of these statin drugs are coming off patent fairly shortly. Lipitor the world’s best selling stain drug will have its patent expire in November of 2011. The cost of the cost to patents at that time will be cut drastically when it goes generic. We are telling you this because statin prescriptions can run as much as $200 per month. You need to save money, and using generic versions of statin drugs as they become available is a brilliant way to save money for other necessary medical expenses.
The second tip we have for you is that if a doctor prescribes 20 milligrams of a statin drug, ask the doctor to prescribe the 40 mg dosage, and cut each pill with a razor blade or other similar cutting instrument. There are actually little devices that allow you to cut pills in half. For just a few dollars more for a higher dosage, you can get a two months supply and save yourself a fortune in drug costs. |

In general unless a drug is a time released pill, you can cut it into different dosages. Now the drug companies would not like to be able to do this. After all, you are cutting right into their profit margins which are astronomical. When all is said and done the actual cost to the drug company for a one month $200 statin drug prescription is really under $2. Drug companies are the most profitable legal industry in the world today. People just don’t realize it.
We are very fortunate that we live in a society where the useful information we have about heart disease is probably doubling every 3 years or. This means that today’s doctors have far more knowledge than was available just a decade or two ago. That’s the good news, the bad news is that doctors who left medical school 20 or more years ago, were given an obsolete education unless them forced themselves to take the time to update their knowledge. Most do, many don’t. Be careful in your selection of doctors, but that’s another tip and another story.
What the statin drug does is lower your LDL cholesterol level significantly. The drug does this by lowering the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase levels in your body. You don’t need to know this. You need to know that your body has LDL cholesterol, and too much of this chemical will increase the plaque creation process in your heart arteries. The statin drugs decrease the LDL levels and therefore decrease the creation of plaque in your body. Will it stop the creation of plaque in your body. It is tough to say, however science believes the following to be true.
If you can get LDL levels in the human body down to around 60, you can stop the creation of plaque dead in its tracks. In other words, once you get LDL levels down to 60 it seems that those plaque deposits on the walls of your artery just aren’t growing anymore.
