If you want to understand the extent of the heart disease problem in the United States today, just look at the following heart disease statistics. |

- The leading cause of death in the United States is you guessed it, coronary heart disease.
- Before the year is over, about 1.2 million Americans will have either their first or a subsequent heart attack. More than 450,000 of these heart attack victims will die from the attack.
- When heart attack symptoms occur, too many people wait too long to react to the symptoms. Seconds counts, not minutes. The cost of waiting too long is that 325,000 heart attack victims die either before getting to the hospital, or die in the emergency room.
- There are almost 8 million Americans who have survived a heart attack also known as a myocardial infarction.
- There are 9 million Americans who suffer from angina which is a reduced blood supply to the heart.

- Two thirds of all Americans over 20 years of age are considered to be overweight. This number is up drastically from 1960.

- Total cholesterol should be less than 200. If cholesterol is over 240, it is considered a major risk factor for heart disease and also stroke.

- 45 million Americans which includes 25 million men, and 20 million women smoke cigarettes, and therefore put themselves at an elevated risk for heart disease.
