| Cholesterol Interpreting Your Numbers |
|
We have all heard from our friends and listening to doctors on televisions shows, the term high cholesterol. It is usually mentioned as, “Oh, he has high cholesterol.” What exactly does this mean, and what can be done about it? First of all, your level of cholesterol in your body is measured specifically in milligrams per deciliter of blood, or in short form (mg/dL. This number by itself is not very meaningful with your doctor taking into account numerous risk factors.
Among them are your age, and what about family history. If your father, mother, aunts and uncles suffer from heart disease, than you having high cholesterol is more meaningful to the doctor than if members of your family do not suffer from atherosclerosis, which is the term for fatty deposits that build on the walls of the arteries in your heart. Smoking and high blood pressure also contribute to heart disease, and this must be taken into account. |

| |
To determine your Cholesterol, the doctor usually takes blood, and orders a panel of tests. The tests include four items usually: |
| |
- HDL (Good) Cholesterol Level
- LDL (Bad) Cholesterol Level
- Triglyceride Level
|
| |
Cholesterol Levels |
| |
240 and higher |
| |
| |
| |
200 to 239 |
| |
| |
200 and lower |
|
|
What it Means
|
| |
This is considered high. You have more than 2 times the
risk of developing heart disease compared to someone
with a level of less than 200.
|
| |
This is termed borderline high |
| |
This is a desirable level. You are at a lower risk level for
heart disease.
|
|
|
| |
|
| |
Keep in mind that regardless of whatever your cholesterol level is, if you have additional risk factors in play, you have a much greater risk for developing heart disease than if the other risk factors are not present. As an example if you smoke, have high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, you’d better do something about it, because your risk is much higher
